Born and raised in America, Richard grows up as a late bloomer-anxious, deeply introspective, and always feeling slightly out of place. Though he tries to build a stable future, he carries a quiet restlessness, a constant sense that something important is missing.
Years earlier, while living in China, Richard met Ashley-a relationship that burned hot, fast, and deeply. China was the first place Richard ever felt truly alive. The culture, the freedom, the intensity of love-it all changed him. But the relationship ended in betrayal and unresolved pain, leaving scars that followed him long after he left.
Back in America, Richard struggles. Jobs feel hollow, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't escape the truth: the most meaningful part of his life happened in Asia. After a long period of reflection, Richard makes a choice-his path must lead back there.
He returns to Japan to finish school, believing discipline and routine might help him rebuild himself. With new friends and a renewed search for direction, he plans a trip back to China-partly for closure.
But he never gets the chance.
After a mysterious accident, Richard wakes up inside Camp Ozzie-a secret, militarized facility hidden from the world. Forty dorms. Constant surveillance. Forced experiments. Brutal punishments for those who resist.
Richard watches others awaken terrifying abilities while he remains painfully human. As the camp prepares a massive inter-dorm tournament-promising work as government soldiers to the winners-Richard fights not just to survive, but to remember who he was before everything was taken from him... and for a chance at a better life.
Memories of Ashley haunt him, especially as her life continues outside the camp-spiraling into toxicity, regret, and the lingering question of what they could have been.
What will Richard do??
