Newt Scamander and Alex share a long history. After the events in New York she goes to look for him. She knows who Grindelwald will be after: her. (More platinic love than romance. I'm not normally a fan of OC fanfics but I couldn't come up with anything else sooooo) This takes place a few months after the events of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I have taken a very small amount of artistic liberties so if a tidbit of some sort does not add up with what has been said previously by JK Rowling in another book, just know it may be on purpose.
