Two years and nine months before Thomas is brought into the story, a girl comes into play at the Glade. The Gladers get attatched to her being the only girl and most treat her like a sister, one in particular has something stronger. Follow the diffiicullties of loss, love, and tough choices in her life in the Glade.

Joan is the only name I remember, once I came up in the box. I was surrounded by lush green grass and high concrete walls, alone. I welcomed the other girls as they came up, built shelters and assigned jobs, but I was still cast out. Welcome to the jungle - or, The Maze, as most would say. Trapped inside the maze for what has been almost a month now, CJ has begun to grow used to the other boys, and gets along with everyone, including a certain blond boy. Until suddenly, her world is turned upside down when Thomas arrives in the Glade- because what may have just been a bad chance to end up in the Maze evolves into a conspiracy of something worse. Running is the only thing about the Maze that Tasha likes; breathing like her lungs are about to give out, blood pumping like it's trying to burst from her veins, wondering if she might ever stop.
