Nick, 18, is currently at University. Charlie, 16, is still at Truham. They talk every day and Charlie mentions that he only has one sweater left of Nick's that smells of him. Cue - 3rd December Nick turns up on Charlie's doorstep with more sweaters that smell of him.

Nick wants to spend more time with Charlie and convinces himself he should join the orchestra in order to make that happen. (Aka, what would happen if Nick joined the orchestra instead of Charlie joining the rugby team? Thank you to u/muaddibyoubetternot on Reddit for the AU idea!)
