They escape their destined fate with the Darkling and along the way they meet a privateer, Sturmhond, who helps them evade capture. Unfortunately, Sturmhond is also deceiving them and he turns out to be more than just a privateer.

-Takes place during Siege and Storm- Alina Starkov has had a rough couple of months with leading the Second Army and having relationship troubles with her best friend, Mal. Not to mention the constant visions of the Darkling that haunt her every time she turns off the lights. She's struggling, but she's making do. But when she sees Mal kissing Zoya, she hits her breaking point. As she storms off from the Little Palace, Alina is hit with problems that she didn't have to worry about at Os Alta; such as where to go and who to trust. A new world of possibilities is open to her, but the thought of being on her own absolutely terrifies her. But she's never really alone; there's always the Darkling waiting in the shadows fro just the right moment to strike.

She burns white-hot, a dying supernova, for a mere second - and then it's gone, back to a reduced shadow (light?) of its former self.
