A miner's canary | noun: Any thing, especially an organism, whose demise or distress provides an early warning of danger. Down in the smoke-smudged streets of Ketterdam, there is a ballerina who dances on the street corners, with six fingers on each of her hands. She wears a good wool coat, holds her chin up high, but at the end of the night, she begs for pennies just like the rest of them. In a city like this, she is uncanny. Starkly different from the grimy Barrel-rats that have control down here. And in Ketterdam, it's no good sticking out from the crowd. Unusual attracts the worst attention possible. Everyone around here wants something that's one of a kind, and Kaz Brekker's always looking to make a new investment.

Damian Doe loves his job. Despite only being twelve, he's spent nearly three years as Kaz Brekker's second in command, weaseling his way up the food chain. He might not remember where he came from, which is why the others have taken to calling him a 'doe', but it's really no big deal! Kaz, however, is ambitious as ever. If he wants to run Ketterdam, he'll need more allies. As two crows become three, and then four, and so on... Damian is starting to realize there might be more to life than just being a Dreg.

Essentially just the combined plot of the Six of Crows books (By Leigh Bardugo) and the plot of the Shadow and Bone show on Netflix, except for the fact that Kaz is actually Ravkan and a Grisha because he's an over achiever. There was only one who fought the red head of Ketterdam and survived, and that was none other than the bastard of the Barrel, Kaz Brekker. The two found a common interest, the blood thirsty desire to take down Pekka Rollins once and for all. The two seemed to form a bond with each other, one that none of the other crows could understand. Although the two seemed to be heartless criminals, they found comfort when the other was in their line of sight. Kaz trusted her, and she trusted him. Though neither of them knew the true reasons for hating Pekka Rollins, they knew that one day, they would work together and make him pay for all the sins he has committed

I read the Grishaverse duologies and don't know how to deal with it so this a piece of self service about Kaz finally telling his friends about his backstory. Takes place right after Rule of Wolves, so, spoiler alert. *also, I know the end of RoW was rather open ended but in this fanfic Hanne is trans and goes by he/him.*

Erine was just a child when she met Kaz Brekker. She was to young to know exactly what it meant to be a crow, but never the less she was one.
