It's a new school year for the students of the boarding school Hope's Peak Academy. The school starts out normally for everyone in it, until it becomes known that a pandemic called the Despair Disease is making its way through Asia and is coming towards Japan. They ignore it until Despair makes it to Japan and causes the school and everything to lockdown. Hope's Peak then, like every other school switches from in person to online instruction. He is kept up all night by his mind's "what if"s and "imagine"s. He uses that time to either study or draw, that way his grades don't plummet as he doesn't want anyone to worry about him. Drawing may seem useless, but to him its an outlet for expression and creativity, plus he could use it to make portrait guesses in future crime cases. Saihara's life is normal and boring as always until his classmate, Kirumi Tojo, and her family end up fostering and possibly adopting a child the same age as the both of them. What happens when he joins the class? What's he like? Will Kirumi be watching him if he acts up? These are questions that ran through Saihara's mind the night he found out.
