Piper Johansson has been living in Fartown his entire life. His father is the proprietor of the Birch Hill Inn, a way station in the middle of the Eastern Waste beyond the edge of the Mantle of High Rock. Piper dreams of following the captains and traders who pass through Fartown, but his father won't let him even leave the village.
Fortunately for Piper, his dusty little town is about to get a lot of company. A wild dragon is sighted in the mountains, setting off a gold rush that will bring the world crashing through Piper's front door. Princes and paupers, dwarfs and goblins, mermaids and airships all come crashing into a life that was never meant to hold them all at once. How will Piper handle so many adventures all at once? And will his relationship with his father survive?
