Ivy Henderson, a young teenage girl starts hearing a boy from below the surface talking to her. She accidentally tells her friends but they don't believe her and think she's schizophrenic. At the same time a machine for erasing memories and the illness of schizophrenic people is invented and her Mom thinks it would be best for her to attend that programme.

He travels across to England to visit family and whilst travelling on a train from London to Cornwall he has a chance meeting that changes his life forever. At the outset he is a rather callow and shallow young man, but through his travels and trials he becomes so much more. His story takes him from Cornwall, to London and Sydney. He learns compassion when he realises that the only difference between himself and others less fortunate is usually nothing more than sheer luck.
