They were often seen swimming near the shorelines, the iridescent scales on their tails and faces catching light in ways impossible to recreate by human means. So humans did what humans did best and hunted them to extinction for these scales like they were any other animal that they thought they had the "god given" right to kill. At least, that's what humans were led to believe. After mermaid numbers began dwindling by this mass purging from humans, they began to hide in fear of being caught by sailors. They dove deep into the depths of the waters and found cave systems unreachable by humans and sunlight alike. This shift in terrain changed their scales from appearing to bend light to as if they were emitting it. No longer giving off iridescent shimmers, but eerie glows. Soon after they went into hiding, mermaids began to be forgotten by human history and turned into stories born from the human need to explain the unexplainable and this worked well in the favor of the merfolk for the next few centuries. All the way until the 21st century when one particular green scaled merman gets curious on what lurks beyond the safety of his cave and meets a girl named Umiko Yasuko fascinated by all things marine.
