At Obsidian Gear Academy, magic and steam rule the future. And Octavian Fairweather is just trying to survive it. Bound by tradition, Shtètal must choose a human for the Favoring, a ceremony that seals fate at the end of the school year. But romance was never part of his plan... even as pressure from his father mounts. As observation becomes attention. The attention becomes something far more dangerous. And at Obsidian Gear Academy, destiny doesn't exactly ask for permission.

I don't cry. I don't yell. My face stays blank, empty. But I'm not empty. I feel. I feel everything. But I can't show it. It's not something that I've chose or want- I just... can't. Never have been able to. I was thrown into a summer camp. Mom said it would be good for me. But I knew the truth- she's too busy to deal with me, too tired to love me.
