It was the late 1980s. Singapore was emerging from it's backwater era, a period reliant on western military powers' presence in the South East Asian region. But the Vietnam war had ended a decade ago and the British had pulled out of Singapore about the same time. Engineers were needed to supply the multinational corporations who replaced the military. Instead of living off war machines we wanted to live off consumers. The National University of Singapore embarked on an ambitious program to recruit 1000 engineering students per year starting in the mid 80s. This is the story of an engineering student in his 3rd year of study.
