Maura never wanted to spend her summer on the Outer Banks. She came only because her mom asked, hoping a short visit would be enough to ease whatever worry was behind her voice. But the moment Maura sets foot on the island, she feels it. The shift in the air. The eyes that linger. The sense that everyone knows something she does not. Her mom told her to enjoy the beaches, meet a few locals, and try to relax. Simple enough. Until Maura starts to notice the patterns. Strangers who seem to recognize her. A family name she has never heard whispered like a warning. A past she does not remember tied tightly to a place she has never been. The Outer Banks has its own rhythm, shaped by secrets buried in sand and salt. Maura is supposed to be a visitor, nothing more. Instead, she finds herself pulled into a story that began long before she arrived, one her mom never prepared her for. Now the island is waking up around her, and Maura has to decide if she is ready to learn the truth it has been holding for years.

She wanted to make her own decisions and not have everything planned out for her.
