North Texas, 1866. The war is over, but the reckoning isn't. When a wounded stranger rides onto Laura Shephard's ranch with men hunting him, a newly inherited spread is the last place she can afford trouble. She has cattle to tend, debts left by her father to reckon with, and a land-hungry world watching for weakness. Letting him stay, only for the night, is a risk she doesn't need. But Jesse Wilkes isn't running from the law for nothing. He's a former Confederate soldier who took paid escort work that turned bloody, then walked away when it stepped over a line he wouldn't cross. Now, a deputy determined to "restore order" has decided the easiest path forward is to make an example of the man and of the ranch sheltering him. As quiet pressure becomes an open threat, the land itself is tested by fire, fear, and the weight of paper that can ruin lives without proving truth. When the law tightens its grip, the man must choose between running again or surrendering to stop the cost from falling on her. Because some debts are paid with money. Others are paid with choices. And not all men who go quietly are broken.

He found all the sisters beautiful, but it was Stevie- he thought- who looked like an angel. Her eyes were nearly colorless, gray even. Her hair was pale the color of a wheat field, and her skin tanned. She was to him someone his sisters could look up to, a role model, a real woman of the west. "Mr. Lewis" she spoke his name softly, her voice he noticed was slightly raspy. Though he had spoken to Billy and Jamie several times Stevie was never one to speak very much. Not in front of him anyway. "Please" he said looking around noticing all at once he wasn't in his own room "call me Ephraim... where am I?" This was a much grander looking room than his, the walls were wooden, and the ceilings were high, the bed was large with a fur blanket covering him, this had to be the Steele's home, but how did he end up here? He looked again to Stevie; she wore a somber expression. "There was an accident..." she looked at him very seriously "Don't you remember being shot?" He leaned his head back on the fluffy pillow behind him and closed his eyes. When he had discovered three unknown men on his ranch taking his cows, he had lost it and, his shoulder- he was shot! His sisters? "Sophie and Tess are here they're safe." she said as if reading his mind He sighed relief and rubbed his forehead, had he fallen from his horse? "My head..." he said feeling nausea overtake him all at once. He closed his eyes once more and willed himself not to be sick. Stevie left only momentarily and brought him, from the smell of it- Peppermint tea. He sipped it and offered his thanks. "Mr. Lewis, glad to see you're up" Billy spoke much louder than Stevie as he walked into the room. His mustache moved as he talked, and he realized that Billy had the same eyes as Stevie did. However, instead of the blond hair, his hair was gray from age.

Consumed with trying to find her way back, she's distracted by Merrick Stone, a boy with an elusively dark past. The more Allie gets to know him, the more she finds herself debating her desire to return home. When his brother, Bryce, enters the picture and is immediately smitten by Allie, it causes unending tension between the brothers. Shortly after her arrival, two shady individuals surface and begin stalking Allie, demanding something she doesn't have. When she refuses to cooperate they allude to a chasm in her past - a mother who abandoned her at birth. These men insinuate her mother is somehow involved in her current predicament. If she returns home it will destroy any hope of learning about her mother's disappearance. Allie knows that if she stays it means death, as her obituary looms closer. But leaving means losing the boy she's in love with. Her mind yearns for the future, but her heart now belongs to the past. It's time for Allie to make a heart-wrenching decision, one that she doesn't know if she'll survive.

A story done in parts about various adventures of a timid small town sheriff who is a little too smart for his own good. It is meant as both a tale of growth and comedy as this man struggles with the uneducated small town folks and the dangerous criminals who make his problems dangerous.

His piece of land is a beautiful little spot about forty miles north of the Ponderosa and he soon discovers his closest neighbor is a pretty young lady named Felicity Quinn. While helping each other through multiple situations, a close friendship grows between them and they aren't sure if they want to continue to be "just neighbors". This is a standalone Bonanza short story. It takes place around the beginning of season six.
