Ever since Adrienne was a child, she knew she was different. I mean, how many kids do you know, that can talk to animals.

Lucy has always had everything. Her family is rich, she has an amazing job, an expensive car, and a huge house. Despite all this, she is amazingly ungrateful. So, to teach her to appriciate her life, her parents set up a "vacation" for her. She has to live without her money, job, and house for two months. She will only be given $10,000 and a small apartment. Her parents are hoping for a big improvement in her character, but even they are amazed by what happens to Lucy's personality.

All the things that you're supposed to learn from your mother, I had to teach myself. I grew up alone. I had no one to teach me right from wrong. I acted purely on instinct and my conscience. My whole life I've never felt love. I don't even know what it feels like. I don't know what it's like to have a family. I would die to feel the love of a mother, even just for a minute. I would die to have a mother who would hug me and somehow all my broken pieces magically go back together. I want to be able to say the words 'I love you mama'. The four words that can make someone feel more precious and important than money and oxygen. But it's too late. I'll never get what I would die for. I'm eighteen now which means I'm out of the foster system. I'm all alone in this world. No family to help me when life gets rough.

She soon begins to go unnoticed there until she is playing Lacrosse alone one day after school. Coach watches from the sidelines as she plays. He soon calls a meeting and she's put on the team. However, what happens when she meets Isaac Lahey? A boy, much like herself. He doesn't have any parents, he's alone. Callie is a 10 year old little girl, with a mind of a small child. When Callie and her parents go to take a canoeing trip with her, something bad happens to the parents, and Callie has to leave and canoe on her own, in the middle of the river, surrounded by nothing except for trees, water, and a little bit of land that she can stop to take a few breaks too. Not only that, but she only has a little to eat, and half of a sandwich and one orange, and there is no telling if she can get back to shore where many people are. And with her parents gone, she has no one, but her tiny little mind of a small child, and a big river, that may be good.
