A young teenage girl, haunted by the memories of her father's execution, attempts to escape a cruel regime by night. A solitary woman, abandoned by her husband, inadvertently plays into the cruel hands of 'the state'. In another totalitarian regime a traffic light fixer is dealt with brutally for admiring a sunset. All these characters capture the essence of what it's like to be disempowered and cruelly dehumanised at the hands of a heinous, corrupt power. This sharp collection of pertinent short stories throws an at times uncomfortable light on cruelty, injustice and persecution that is all too relevant today. But ultimately these stories celebrate the strength and determination to survive at all costs, that exists within all of us.

The chatter of people, the honking of vehicles, and the football match playing on television. Everything became just pure white noise. I stood there, still like a lifeless statue. A thunderous voice boomed in my head and yanked me out of my shock, pulling me to the present moment. "You understand?" His voice was loud and clear, like a punch to the gut. "No," I said, my voice raspy. I couldn't let that happen. I couldn't let him treat me like that. "No," I said again, clenching my fists to stop them from shaking, "You are wrong. The world is split into the Elites, the Avitae and the Synthi. They are kept apart, with no social interaction with each other, only seen on the occasion that an Avitae serves either a Synthi or an Elite. There are significantly more Synthi and Avitae than the Elite. Simply because the Elite have been genetically mutated to work harder, faster and better than the Synthi and obviously the Avitae. Their job is keep "order" in the city, and break down the rebellious. She is the best Elite there is. She exceeds, able to work harder and think faster than most Elite. When she finds out a secret, hidden by the Superior, she is convinced that it, could break the whole system, and that definitely won't be a good thing. For either of them.

Sonder: n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk. HE is a boy brought up an raised to be a southern gentleman. A boy who is confident, social, and yet never too involved. He's a hard worker and he's set up the foundations of what is to be a good life, thanks to his parents' strict regime – 'there is a time for everything and this is not a time for relationships' – which has, so far, worked. But there is still a part of him somewhere that wonders what would happen if he stepped to the other side, where life isn't so completely set out for him. But instead he's thrown headfirst into it and everything changes overnight. SHE is a girl defined by her family – traditional, southern, and introverted. And so far, life has set her out on a good path – she's content with being an indoors girl, reserved, quiet, studious. But in this new world, where inhibitions are let loose and set free to reign, she finds herself crumbling as she is torn between everything she has been brought up with and that small, repressed part of her that is unleashed one night. And one night changes everything. Sonder: Everyone has a story. This is theirs.

The community of Sandor are caved in, forbidden by those higher than them to come out. Changes happen, which brings along new ideas that aren't really new-just forbidden. But what goes in must come out...
