Ashes and Dust is a short story loosely based on the life of World War II Veteran Jay S. Adams and inspired by his interview by Tom Swope for the Veterans History Project from the Library of Congress.

This historical fiction novel tells the story of an Idaho family's encounter with a Nez Perce tribal leader and the revealing of a sacred site that lies along the South Fork of the Boise River. The local power company plans to destroy the site by building a dam. The father in the family works for the power company and finds himself in a crisis of conscience. The story contains two flashbacks that show the conflicts between the Nez Perce and Shoshone tribes and the early British trappers and American soldiers.
