Inutile dire che gli occhi di tutti erano puntati su di noi, pronti a valutare e giudicare le nostre persone, probabilmente basandosi sulle nostre rendite più che sulle apparenze iniziali. Venali signorotti di campagna. Ma questo lo sapevo già, sapevo che sarebbe andata esattamente così. Chiacchiere vane, presentazioni inutili con gente altrettanto vuota e interessata. Arrivisti che sopravvalutavano se stessi e il proprio scarso patrimonio, vantandosi e gonfiandosi il petto, mentre le loro mogli tentavano di vendere le figlie al primo miglior offerente in circolazione. Non potevo fare a meno di sentirmi superiore a tutti loro, ed in effetti lo ero... Quello che, invece, non avrei mai potuto sapere o nemmeno lontanamente immaginare, fu l'incontro di un paio di occhi castani che sembravano dipinti, così grandi e profondi da potercisi immergere dentro, di lunghe e folte ciglia scure, che incorniciavano perfettamente quel capolavoro, di uno sguardo così furbo e malizioso, ma allo stesso tempo ridente e ammaliatore, da restarne folgorato. Quello che non potevo sapere, era che quello sguardo mi avrebbe inseguito ovunque, dandomi il tormento e affascinandomi al tempo stesso. Quello che non potevo sapere, era che quegli occhi mi avrebbero stravolto la vita e avrebbero tolto le bende dai miei, che mi rendevano cieco, troppo preso dal mio orgoglio e dal mio pregiudizio.
