Zane is a reef dweller with a translucent tail and undercurrents in his hair that luminescence in tune to his emotions. He is happy living in the reef kingdom with his best friends Ben and Alani. Then one night the Coral royal family opens up their palace to the public to celebrate and honor the visiting trench royal family where Zane meets Cassian, the prince heir to the trench kingdom who has been on a royal tour searching for a mate to claim and marry. No mermaid has caught his eyes until he spotted Zane and has claimed him as his betrothed. Zane reluctantly goes to the trench to marry Cassian within a month, not wanting to be the cause of a war between the reef and the trench if he refuses. Zane must learn etiquette and the wedding process while getting used to his protective new fiancé all the while trying not to die while two assassination attempts are on him that opens up a conspiracy.
