This is a poem about the Battle of Osowiec, more popularly known as the Attack of the Dead Men. Taking place on August 6th, 1915, it was a brutal episode in the Great War that showed the resolution and loyalty of the Russian soldiers who, despite being battered and destroyed by chlorine gas, charged on the 7000 German soldiers marching towards Osowiec. They successfully protected the fortress, although it was eventually abandoned on the 18th of August due to it being too damaged, and the Germans threatening to encircle it.
