Sierra was nine years old and was living with two abusive parents who wished that she had never been born. To them, Sierra was a mistake, a malady that was wasting their money by living. Both parents were severe alcoholics, use drugs more than they took their daily supplements, and had been more irresponsible than a toddler in raising their nine year old daughter. All Sierra wanted in life was for someone to love her, to hold her, and tell her that she matters. Unable to cope with what happens to her on a daily basis at home, Sierra goes to extreme measures to escape the realities of the real world. She heads out onto the streets as a runaway to avoid getting beaten by her parents, and in doing so, gets abducted by a new stranger who has a sick plan of forcing people to his will. She meets a group of kids living in an old abandoned mansion in the middle of nowhere where this man has stashed them all. These kids, all abused and alone like her, take her in, and Sierra must learn how to accept people into her life and not be afraid as she once was. Will things turn out for better or for worse with Sierra, and will she ever be able to look at herself without seeing the pathetic girl she viewed herself as before she ran away?

She never imagined seeing him again-not after everything that had shattered between them. But fate had its own timing. There he stood, framed in the doorway, no greeting, no hesitation. His voice was sharp and steady-low, yet piercing-carrying a weight she couldn't ignore. "If you truly love someone, you owe them the truth. You can't keep them in the dark. Not forever." She stood frozen, every word tangled in her throat. Finally, fragile but firm, her voice broke the silence: "I... I need some time." He exhaled slowly. "Fine." Stepping back toward the exit, he paused, then looked over his shoulder. His eyes held something deep, unreadable, unspoken. "Just so you know... I have no problem with you staying there." With that, he left-leaving behind a silence that was anything but peaceful. It was the sound of an unfinished story-and the beginning of something neither of them could control.

All of a sudden, I feel a pair of arms wrap around me. I struggle, trying to shove out of their grasp, but they have me stuck. Pushing and kicking, I try to release myself, and after a moment I settle, knowing I have been cornered. I stand in the vast emptiness, the vision vanishing before me, as I realize the arms are caressing my skin, calming to the tips of my toes. My heart slows, as I admit defeat in this sanctuary of comfort. ... Life for fourteen year old Anna Clarke has become a daily struggle. Her past haunts her, and her future is daunting. Crippling into depression at a young age, Anna finds no hope, and no reason to continue the endlessly dark tunnel she calls life. But her mind comes to the rescue, as her subconscious starts to portray a world of reassuring and love, in the form of her dreams, in which a stranger comforts her and fills her with a light she could never have imagined. Anna still finds little motive to have hope, but dreams do come true, don't they? ... Warning: There are some depression and anxiety scenes in this book, as well as slightly violent ones.
