Khalil was paralyzed by a bullet, which caused an evil man named Tobias Whale to form a deal with the striving track star. A robotic spinal implant was placed in his back so that he could walk again. Khalil soon became a runner for Tobias' mob, but was not repaid with gratitude. Tobias ripped out Khalil's robotic spine and he died a painful death-or so we thought. In reality, Payne was taken by a government agency called the ASA to become a weapon. They saved him, trained him, and implanted a brain chip that controlled his mind to the point that he killed his own mother with zero remorse. Khalil's alter ego, Painkiller, was a ruthless and twisted part of himself that was hidden but desperately needed for Khalil to survive.
