Ren abandoned Toshiro due to Ren doing a bad choice in life and not wanting his only son to get involved. Him and Kushina got divorced when Toshiro was 5. Kushina was engaged to Minato before Naruto was born. When they both died; Toshiro (who was only 7) had to go to school, work part time, look after himself and look after his brother.
