He comes back as Dyak—a hunter-shepherd dog bonded to the boy Attu, whose tribe is crossing the great land bridge over the Bering Straits. Then he's Tekhe, a small saluki-like pet of a master embalmer to the Pharaoh Tutankhamen. Then, a sleeve-dog in the Chinese court of 800 BCE. Over the next 3,000 years, in Imperial Rome, medieval Afghanistan and France, Shakespeare's London, the arid north country of colonial Mexico, the muddy shell-shocked trenches of WWI, space-age Russia, the United States, and 21st Century Canada, Jack--the eternal dog--has a new master or mistress in each incarnation. But is Jack the one who’s changing or is he the agent of change? Why does Jack come back?

Approximately 300.000 years ago homo sapiens appeared. They were different from the other people because of their protruding faces, their forward-pointing nose, their remarkable chin, and their rounded heads. Their lungs, legs, and pelvis were built to run long distances. They were also different because they formed large tribes, communicated differently, and created networks with other tribes. About 200.000 years ago something else changed. Homo sapiens went from being hunted and being prey to becoming hunters who also fought predators. They learned how to control fire, how to make (better) tools, and invented weapons. They started to explore their wider surroundings, creating trade routes with other tribes, and exchanging young adults with each other, thus keeping the population healthy by preventing inbreeding. Meet Ahn, a young adult man of sixteen summers. Something happened to him, which his mother explained as "he was being touched by the Gods, but they were too big to stay inside his head." Ahn has many ideas, some of which he has no idea where they come from, and he is revolutionizing the way the tribe has always lived. He is the first one to establish self-confidence without fear of predators. He is the first one in the tribe ever to kill a predator, and he teaches his friends and fellow tribes-people to cooperate to do the same. Together, they share this knowledge with other human tribes. Follow the life of Ahn and his friends and read how they change their own destiny, the destiny of their tribe, as well as the destiny of Homo sapiens.
