It's 2001, and Emily has lost her childhood home to both a haunting spirit and now the government is ready to snatch it up. Emily regrets ever inviting that spirit into her house and wants to make it right (and get her stuff back). Terrified since the ghost possessed her, Emily's life takes an unexpected turn when her name is drawn for a rare Halloween festival. A camp of spirits is the last place she wants to go, but if she doesn't show up, her classmates won't let her hear the end of it. But a comment from a classmate suggests the festival may hold the secret to banishing the spirit. Digging deeper, Emily learns about a mysterious portal opener who releases spirits on festival grounds every nineteen years. This has happened since the first festival's unexplainable "accident." Joined by her cousins, Emily rides terrifying rides, follows suspicious camp leaders, questions creepy carnies, and pieces together clues about the festival's dark past. All while gathering tickets to win the grand prize and spite a bully. But when Emily discovers a secret book, she must face her fears before the spirits unleash a dangerous entity. If she can't control her fears, everyone at the festival risks losing their sanity. Can she master her fears, banish the spirits, and reclaim her home? *** HIGHEST RANKINGS: #1 carnies #3 paranormalmystery #5 dark-past #8 whodunit #10 portals #11 sleuth #15 middle-grade

Del fills the vacancy left by the corpse in the woods, Calista Nightgrave. Calista should have been the next bride to a wealthy vampire, but instead she is a lowly zombie that's furious over the shift in her immortal afterlife. "The house is haunted, Miss Jones. Haunted. There is an evil ghost in my home and I want it gone!" Andromache Jones is a tarot-reading witch from the sleepy village of Bramblesgrove, where she runs River Gardens Mystical Services. From here, she gives tarot readings, casts runes, gazes lovingly at the moon and stars, plays with crystals and herbs...and sometimes solves crimes. She likes to think of herself as a part-time private detective who untangles mysteries, but really she is an amateur sleuth who happens to attract trouble - and troublesome clients. It's been three days since Andromache Jones suffered her ordeal at the hands of The Magician and she doesn't know what to do with herself. She doesn't think she is up to working. She is not very keen on the idea of getting out of bed. In truth, all she wants is to be left alone. Unlucky for her, Jean Pottersworth is very persistent. Does she have a case that might chase away Mac's blues? The Apparition is the second short story in the Andromache Jones Mysteries series. The first is The Magician (also here on Wattpad), which you might want to read before The Apparition but if you don't, it shouldn't effect your enjoyment of the story.

Candy was a pretty little seven-year-old girl like any other in Shirley County. She was prone to singing and dancing and splashing in the rain, in her yellow polka dot bikini and her favorite red galoshes. John was a normal little boy and he loved playing with his best friend, Candy. But their bond drew a darkness that had long stayed hidden in a small, southern mountain town. But our story begins long after that, when Candy and John are teenagers. John, caught up in the business of life, stops spending his summers in Shirley County. And Candy, hurt and lonely at first, moves on as well. She meets Sam, the new boy in town. Even though she has never ventured more than a hundred miles from her home, she has never felt at ease there. At odds with her high school friends and bored with her small town existence, she finds the adventure she needs in Sam. He is cool, confident, independent, and Candy likes that. He lives on the fringes of society, and perhaps she likes that, too. But she is sometimes overcome with a sense of dread, like a shadow has passed, just on the edge of vision. When John finally does find his way back, it’s to a Shirley County more disturbing than he remembers. He’s accosted by strange dreams, the evidence scrawled so frantically that his paper is ragged and torn. Howling animal masks and flailing human figures. Teeth sharp as razors. And John’s once comforting presence becomes unwelcome, when he turns up troubling information on Sam’s past. Despite the confusion of strained friendships, new romance, and high school intrigues, John and Candy begin to suspect something more sinister lurking amidst the days of football glory and the nights of clandestine rendezvous. And then there is a murder. There are dark spirits in the mountains of Shirley County, and one of them is bent on revenge.

This is a story I started writing in my French Revolutions class. Genre: Paranormal Mystery, Psychological Thriller Target Audience: Young Adult, Adult This story begins in a dark, dark room, there was no sound and all was still. Except that is for the little girl that had shrunken into the corner as if to hide from the big bad wolf. Did this girl know she was not actually alone I wondered. Could she see me? If she could that would mean that I was not really dead. But what if she was a medium? Then I would never know. Then it occurred to me. Why are we here? Where even is here? I try searching for an exit. There isn't one. Still, the girl does not move, it doesn't even look like she is breathing. I go over to her. Her eyes are closed. Maybe she's asleep. I leave her there. There must be a way out. If we made it in. there has to be. I must keep looking.

Valeria's romantic involvement with a professor who brings her into the case, further complicates her dealings as she begins to learn of her own hidden connection to the occult. The case brings the young researcher to a nexus of light and dark elements in the spiritual world. But in the process, she experiences a harrowing descent into the world of paranormal activity.
