She had a bad feeling about what was about to happen: the whole scene looked straight out of an action movie. She had no way out of here-her mysterious power, her trusty medeis, was a piece of useless sod at the moment and her choices were to either drown or face ridicule. She almost chose to drown.
He stepped forward, handsomely terrifying, and a glint in his glacial blue eyes glittered like golden sunlight. Then it started to glow, and she realized it wasn't sunlight. It was his medeis-presumably firepower. She'd never seen it, but it wasn't that harmful...
Oh no.
He smiled like a vampire, his incisors visible perfectly. "I have a knack of showing people who they've messed with. Poor you."
A few in the crowd flinched, maybe remembering what had happened when they hadn't known better, and had committed the exact same mistake. Bad signs. She should have booked two beds in the infirmary in advance.
The boy's hand caught fire. Her guess had been spot‑on, but she wasn't concerned about that now. She was more concerned with trying to figure out how to avoid dying at the hands of this hot Satan.
She braced herself-
