Every night, Kimberly dreamed of an island with mangrove trees. She woke up as the sole survivor of a shipwreck. It all started with the fishermen. The sea became poisonous. It lashed out. It took. Two worlds collide when a pathogen infects 3/4 of the United States' population. Grace Chandler, a happy go lucky teen had been living by her lonesome for quite awhile. Finally she musters enough courage to leave her isolated home and step into the unpredictable outdoors. But what she discovers, who she discovers changes her life forever.

Although this does not take place before the beginning of the book, this is meant to provide insight as to what is going on and to what is expected. As much as I am proud of this five-hundred word introduction, I am not certain whether or not I shall insert this as a chapter.

A very infectious and aersolised form of bacterial meningitis has been released in the population via a biological attack. This form of meningitis has a tertiary stage of symptoms that are brought on by brain damage to the cerebral cortex. Dementia and aggression turn the infected into a rage filled, animalistic creature. Here is the small story told from the point of view of a marine, fresh out of deployment overseas. (This is a backstory for a roleplay AU for the character in Ignite.)

A virus called The Pathogen has taken over the world. Fifteen-year-old Aiden Russo and her best friend Jamie Diakos are in the midst of it. When Aiden's mother comes down with the virus and turns into what the infected are called - The Phantoms - Jamie and Aiden run away from their Phantom-infested city. They come across The Asylum, a safe haven for people who have fled their infected homelands. They meet the co-leader, Michelle Malone. The three of them decide to scout ahead of the group and go to The Last City - where their government, The Rule, has inhabited itself. Along the way, they rescue Will Lorenzen and fight off Phantoms. Aiden has a huge secret she's kept from everyone, and it may cost her her life. But The Rule has a bigger secret - one they've kept from the world. When they reach The Last City, the secret is revealed and there is an uprising. But the friends have no time to join the uprising - they have to save Aiden from herself first.
