I've personally never had a relative or loved one who's served in the army. But I know of people who do, people who've experienced the loss of a soldier. I could never pretend to understand that kind of loss, but of all the stories I've heard, real and fictional, this is what I thought those families would feel, perhaps a hundred times amplified. The uncertainty of their loved ones' survival, worry eating away each day....I write this as someone who's heard all of you, brave souls' stories, as someone who is forever grateful for the military, as someone who's only ever witnessed the fledglings of this grief and loss with having lost and mourned over fictional deaths. I hope this poem also reaches those readers who grow too attached to their characters and had wept away at the deaths of Ned Stark, Jason Grace, Matthias Helver and Sirius Black, soldiers in their own right. This short poem simply portrays, in a nutshell that... Against all odds, courage by standing our ground will help us defeat fear and adversity.
