Amidst their battle against enemy warlord Mega Tron shortly after they are found by their planet's life source, the All Spark, kind robot Optimus Prime and his crew, Ratchet, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, Prowl, Sideswipe, Sun Streaker, Mirage & Hound, fall towards Earth, where he steers their spaceship away from civilians before joining them in stasis. Half a century later, they wake up after a piece of a creature enters their spaceship and give themselves new vehicle modes. While Ratchet analyzes the piece, the rest of the crew goes to fight the creature. During the battle, Bumblebee earns the full trust of twin girls Sari & Slate Sumdac and their older sister Saga, who is four years older than the twin girls. They later get two more friends in Luxury and Meadow James, teen sisters who are four years apart in age and live with their father, diner owner Ryle James, and grandmother, retired restaurant waitress Talulah James, both of whom had recently told both the seventeen and thirteen year old girls they aren't humans, but sisterly robotic beings.

Half a year after her fifth birthday, Anthea Edwards loses her widowed mother Indy to a gunman in a restaurant robbery in Sacramento, California. As a result, she is left orphaned due to having lost her father Marcel when she was a year and three months old. Therefore, she leaves behind her hometown after the funeral four days after this and travels on a train with all of her belongings to Detroit, Michigan. There, she gets help with getting the boxes off the train and is driven to the home of her maternal grandparents Nolan & Emery Silvers, both of whom take her in shortly after learning of Indy's death. Twelve years later, Anthea, who is now seventeen and a half, sees five kind robots battling a evil robot whilst out on a morning walk and is later told by her grandparents she was found inside a escape pod by her parents four and a half years after they married. Three days after this, Anthea tells one of her saviors the reason why she chose to go live with Nolan and Emery instead of Marcel's family.
