The crowd's initial alarm at our appearance quickly changed to cheers and shouts of "District Twelve!" Every head was turned our way; every eye was trained on us. I froze up, terrified of all the attention, until I caught a glimpse of Katniss beside me. In the deepening twilight, the firelight illuminated her face. She seemed to be leaving a trail of fire behind her. I saw her lift her chin, put on her most winning smile, and wave with her free hand. Katniss was radiant, her figure wreathed in flames. She noticed me staring, and glanced at me with a small smile before looking back out at the crowd and blowing kisses. That smile brought a grin to my lips, and I waved to the crowd as well, filled with an odd glow, my fingers intertwined with Katniss'. I looked to the right of me, to my older brother, Rye. He was older than I was, and even though I knew he wouldn't, I wish he had volunteered for me as Katniss did for Prim. I was not as young as she was, but isn't an older brother or sister's job to protect? Clearly not. As I took my place next to Katniss, I was met with a cold, hard stare, that's right. She hated me, for reasons that were never clarified. I've never been anything but polite, kind, I thought she was the most beautiful girl in our district, no, the most beautiful girl in Panem. Prettier than women of the Capitol, Katniss was a rare natural beauty, with long streaming brown hair, folded nicely into a single braid. Her hand shook mine, hard, distant and as I cracked a small smile, it was not returned, just met with a glare. These next few weeks will be Character Building, that's for sure.
