"I Wish He Would Die!" is not something Jimmy Wagner should have carved into his notebook about his ninth grade social studies teacher, especially with a broken arm, and one that's cursed on top of that.
It wasn't really his fault, though. Aunt Bridget was the one who put the curse on him. She had been doing things like this ever since he could remember. Every summer, when he stayed at his aunt and uncle's farm in Pennsylvania Dutch country, he had been the sole focus of her ridiculous superstitions after his mother was killed when he was five.
While he never really did believe half of his aunt’s tales, the summer of August 1999 (before Y2K) was different. Jimmy’s nagging suspicions about his aunt’s warnings start to come true after he falls from scaffolding while helping his uncle re-paint a protective hex sign on their barn. If a broken arm during the summer wasn’t bad enough with the words “cursed for not wearing underwear” scrawled on his cast in his aunt’s large, shaky handwriting, Jimmy discovers he also has to deal with the bitterness he feels toward his father, a New England lobsterman, who has now abandoned him until November to work an extra three months in the arctic. This means Jimmy has to start as a freshman in a strange new high school all the while trying to hide the superstitious antics at his semi-temporary home in Kutztown, as well as the fact that he is now obviously cursed…because not only has what he wished for come true, his curse may have gone beyond his control.
