Registration for the Diagnostics competition had opened-three days ago. Interns, residents-anyone could enter, and he assumed she would. In fact, he was certain. Stepping as he did every morning into the attendings lounge, Ethan was sure he would see her name at the top of the list. On day one. But he hadn't. Not that he was checking. He just happened to notice. Once. Maybe twice. Because it was unusual. Unexpected. Yes, that's all it was. Someone like her-brilliant, competitive, built for exactly this. It didn't make sense. And when things didn't make sense, Ethan asked questions. Privately. Objectively. And sometimes, he got close. Up close. Just to figure it out.
