The New Testament is an apocalypse, not a history. New Testament evidence suggests that the knowledge of Christ's coming was communicated beforehand to preselected witnesses through the agency of the Holy Spirit. It appears, then, that the theological purpose of the gospels is to provide a fitting introduction to the messianic story beforehand so that it can be passed down from generation to generation until the time of its fulfilment. It's as though New Testament history is written in advance!

Taking the Bible literally can lead to unrealistic and outrageous conclusions. It's important to stress that a refutation of the historical flood narrative is not a refutation of the Bible. The scriptural "truths" work on many different levels.
