In 1958 Singapore, in a kampung house festering with jinns, five-year-old Safiyyah only sees "friends". But one night, her father's muffled screams echo from beneath the floorboards. Then comes a bestial growl from the shadows saying that it can save him if she sings a special song. Desperate to save her father, Safiyyah agrees. When an innocent child obeys without understanding the cost, it awakens an ancient guardian and its power that should have remained sealed. Another presence in the house stirs - one pretending to be human. Melati believes she is among the living, but the guardian remembers otherwise. It knows what Melati was before she "lived".
