"You know the truth, Alexander, you know why I was sent away for the summer, why won't you tell me?" My faces scrunches together thoughtfully.
"I can't, Elsie, you wouldn't understand, if I tell you then it would be the end of everything." His arms move as if to hug me but drop to his sides a second later. I look at his face, his dimples and the crease between his brows. All the parts I had come to know like the back of my hand now become a stranger to me.
"The end of what, Alex, what could be so important that you can't tell me?" You're best friend? The person you tell everything too? I bite my tongue.
"You, Elisabeth. It would mean the end of us and everything else that I love."
