On the night of his 13th birthday he gets attacked with a ninjutsu from one of the ninja beating him, that will affect the rest of his sorrow filled life. Naruto is the container for the 9 Tailed Fox Kurama. But along with that he has all the elemental affinities and releases. He can munipulate them and use them in his Jutsu for more power.
