Falling in love was their greatest treason. In 1870, Ada Miller and her family arrive in Kansas as Exodusters-Black pioneers seeking refuge from the post-Civil War South and fighting to claim their rights as U.S. citizens. To Ada, this endless prairie is her family's first taste of true freedom. To Little Puma, a hot-headed Osage warrior, her family is just another wave of squatters stealing his people's land. Their meeting is a clash of steel and stubborn pride, sparking a bitter hatred that burns as hot as the summer sun. But as the local town pushes the Osage to the brink of war, these sworn enemies are forced into a tense, secret alliance that ignites into a passionate, dangerous affair. Bound by a shared struggle against a system built to destroy them both, they must choose between the loyalty they owe their people, and an explosive love that could burn the entire prairie to the ground.

After years away, Red Willow returns to her Osage homeland. She returns with a mind shaped by another culture, a heart divided between two worlds, and the fear that she no longer truly belongs in either. The prairie she once knew has changed. Buffalo have grown scarce, settlers press ever closer to Osage lands, and the traditions she left behind now feel both familiar and distant. While her grandmother welcomes her with open arms, Red Willow struggles to reconnect with the people and customs that once defined her. Among those who challenge her is Little Puma, a spirited young hunter whose stubborn courage is matched only by his unwavering devotion to his people. He cannot understand why Red Willow speaks differently, questions old traditions, or hesitates to embrace the life she left behind. She cannot understand why he refuses to believe that change is inevitable. Will their disagreements turn into an unexpected friendship, or will the divide between the two worlds only grow greater? Welcome to the 1980s on the prairie, where the Wi-Fi doesn't exist, the water comes from a hand pump, and the family "entertainment system" is a cardboard cutout of Chuck Norris. In this hilarious and mostly true memoir, join Ginna as she navigates a childhood defined by wide-open spaces and questionable parenting choices. From digging holes for giant tires just to stay busy, to serving as the family's human TV antenna during hockey games, these are the stories of a girl trying to survive farm life without losing her mind (or her toes to the frostbite). Prepare for tales of outhouses, tobacco-rolling machines, and the time a hail storm tried to win a snowball fight against the house. It's a love letter to a simpler time-when "social networking" meant listening to the coyotes howl and the only thing scarier than the dark was failing Dad's post-episode David Suzuki quiz.

I am from the prairie so when I traveled to places with hills and mountains I was enthralled. A stylized description of a shifting landscape morphed into a surreal story of a growing paradise and a girl (spirit) who finds freedom. In an odd way (despite obvious differences) the girl reminds me a little of Ariel from The Tempest, hence the quote as the title.
