"Between the Song and My Prayer" is a heartfelt coming-of-age story inspired by the struggles of real-life teens growing up in complicated families while trying to find their place in the world. It follows Angel, a strong-willed and independent young woman, who navigates life burdened by family responsibilities, trauma, and heartbreak, yet still seeks peace, love, and purpose.
Angel grew up in a home shadowed by loss and hardship. Her mother is distant and reckless, leaving Angel to care for her younger siblings and a pamangkin (niece/nephew). Despite the chaos at home, Angel finds refuge in the small joys of friendship and community. She experiences the world of teenage freedom through hanging out with friends, even as she struggles to balance responsibility and personal freedom.
Spiritually, Angel has faith, but her belief is tested constantly. While she prays every night, she feels that God doesn't answer her pleas, especially after losing people who meant a lot to her. She questions why those who supported her, or those she loved, are taken away, making her distrustful and bitter, yet still deeply human.
