Azadax
Certainties that arrive from nowhere and turn out to be true. The sense that the world is trying to tell him something, in a language he doesn't have yet. Az has never been able to explain any of it, and he has never told anyone, except Jade, who believes him without needing proof.
On the eve of the selections for the great schools of magic, Jade finally tells him why, and the world he thought he lived in comes apart. There is a name for what he is, and a presence that comes with it, asleep inside him. One that answers everything he asks, in a voice he can never quite bring himself to trust. And there is what she has never told anyone: what was done to her, years ago, by people who are still close, still smiling, and whom no one else can see for what they are.
Az can. That is the trouble with knowing things. So he stays near her. He tells himself it is to keep her safe, and for a while he believes it. Then staying near her becomes the only place he wants to be, and he can no longer tell where protecting her ends and loving her begins. But keeping her safe means stepping deeper into a world that will quietly drain everything he is.
A gift he never asked for. A presence that may be lying. And a love he keeps hidden even from himself, and would lose everything to protect.
