In a world of magic and love, she plays a larger role than her stubborn naivety would allow and as her destiny and those around her dictate to whom she should hand her heart, she had better pray that she can protect her king before they're caught in checkmate.

A wayward regency au one shot I wrote for fun, and because the concept wouldn't stop haunting my mind. ~ Trying to get back up after his ex-fiancé left him, Lord Arthur Pendragon relents to his friends and families idea of hosting a party in his family's estate. Although holding up hope for a new love that evening, he could not predict falling head over heel for a woman with haunted eyes, who secretly hides a crooked and wicked grin and a spark of intrigue unlike any he's glimpses before. After catching the sight of that side of her, and the way her families mistreatment severely dampens it, he finds himself sure of one thing. He's going to get her out their grasp, but doing so might be more tricky then first expected. Miss Harriet Frodesdotter is stuck in a hell of constantly being forced into a uncomfortable, lace covered, dress, into unbearably loud ballrooms, and dealing with condescending suitors that her controlling sister manages to steer towards her. The sudden approach by a Lord Pendragon does make her pause however, his sweet and concerned eyes appearing to be almost horrifyingly sincere as he offers to help her with her family issues. She doesn't trust him, he's not the first to claim to be her savour for purely selfish reasons, but something tells her that there's something more to him, and not in a bad way. ~ Content warning for ableism, family issues (including abuse, I don't perceive it as especially graphic, but it's there) and depictions of meltdowns.

Arthur is conscious enough during Lancelot's fight with the Griffin to hear someone speak magic, and he comes to the conclusion that Lancelot is a sorcerer. After Arthur speaks with Merlin though, he realizes that he might have been wrong. Set in 1x05 Lancelot.

In a parallel 2020, Prince Arthur moves out of home with flatmate Merlin when a mysterious plague spreads across the land and sends Camelot into a lockdown. Uther is quick to blame sorcerers, Arthur needs to decide if he supports the king, and being in lockdown with the prince means Merlin really needs to keep his magic a secret. Both are left to ponder questions we might have had in recent times: - How am I going to stay in all day? - Am I kind of boring for being almost unaffected by this? - Should I trust a flatmate to give me a lockdown haircut? Either way, Merlin and Arthur are mostly stuck at home -and with each other- catching up on some soul-searching. Indefinitely.

This is the first part of my Merlin: Alternate Stories series, this one on S1EP2 Valiant. What if Merlin didn't have time to learn the spell? Would Arthur be killed? Would Merlin get caught for using magic? Would valiant get away? There will be multiple books in this series, all different "What If's?" Of different Merlin episodes I do not own the characters or the beginning Original storyline, those belong to the BBC. I just change and extend the plot. I hope you enjoy reading this!

I love Merlin. I love Merthur. It is one of my favourite series ever and this little project is for myself more than anyone else. I publishing this and I hope you enjoy and I hope you think I do my favourite series justice. Please be aware that these chapters are going to be quite long due to the fact I writing out the episodes.
