During a mysterious archaeological dig in Meiji-era Japan, Professor Hershel Layton and his assistant Luke Triton discover a strange artifact that is said to predict the future. But when Layton examines it more closely, he and Luke are transported to an unfamiliar world: 19th-century Japan.
Meanwhile, rising young lawyer Ryunosuke Naruhodo receives a perplexing and dangerous case: a man dressed in a top hat and scholar's cloak is accused of committing a murder using an "impossible" method. With the help of Susato Mikotoba, Herlock Sholmes, and the brilliant Iris Wilson, Ryunosuke embarks on an investigation with implications far greater than a simple crime.
Layton, seeking to prove his innocence, uses his logic and gift for puzzles to prove that he is the victim of a conspiracy. As the investigation progresses, a mysterious group operating in the shadows seems to be manipulating the judicial system to hide a disturbing truth: an ancient secret about British and Japanese justice, involving historical figures and a power capable of altering reality itself.
To solve this case, Ryunosuke and Layton will have to join forces and confront the legendary prosecutor Barok van Zieks, while unraveling a web of mysteries that will lead them to the highest echelons of power.
Between puzzles, deductions and epic legal battles, will they be able to reveal the truth before it is erased forever?
