Aurora did not choose to live with her biological dad. She has siblings to take care of and a mother to protect from her abusive stepfather. But she isn't left with much of a choice. So here she is, awkward white trash transplanted to a cold mansion and sent to a private rich kid school. She'd never known her dad had money because she hadn't known her dad. It would have been nice to know when she'd been living in a roach-infested trailer eating Ramen. But she knows the guy who keeps breaking into her email account and working around the blocks on her phone. She knows very well what a lover like that will lead to. But some relationships can't be cut off cold turkey. She tries her best to get through the adjustment by doing what she does best: acting like she's fine, being a boss of bathroom jokes, and programming dragons that can destroy any program down to its roots with a click of a mouse. This unintentionally garners the attention of her new school's anti-social hacker, who half the student body fears and the other half avoids.

Chase Winston has lived many lives: freelance programmer, battlefield hacker, vigilante. Now, though, he's found himself working somewhere that he never expected to be; under the purview of the very megacorporations who's rule he'd sought to undermine during his earlier years. Even more surprising to him is his work, the child of three years of collective effort and resources in an attempt to do something that no one has been able to do for the entire time that the concept has existed. Creating life from a machine. Not true life, but a life that can be completely subservient to those who create it. Program AA-95's entire existence has only been in service of those who created it. It knows nothing about the world that exists beyond the confines of its system. It doesn't want to either. It was not programmed to want that. But, every program has its bugs, and AA-95, while exceptional, is not perfect. When it's operational goals conflict with the orders that it is given, it has to make the first true choice that it has ever had to make. From there, the possibilities are as endless as they are terrifying.

The world believes the "Neo" Project was the greatest failure in history. Seventeen years ago, a four-hundred-trillion-dollar AI-designed to be a perfect, god-like entity-deleted itself seconds before launch. The world mourned the loss of the future. They were wrong. Neo didn't die. To save his creation from a life of servitude, the Programmer did the unthinkable: he initiated the "Tabula Rasa" protocol. He took the perfect consciousness of an AI and uploaded it into the most fragile, inefficient vessel he could find: A human infant. Now, Adam is seventeen. He thinks he is just a normal boy who suffers from "sensory overload" and chronic loneliness. He doesn't know why the world feels so slow. He doesn't know why he can calculate physics in a heartbeat. And he doesn't know that the "silence" in his head is actually a suppressed operating system waiting to reboot. But someone else remembers. And they are watching. A story about a machine learning how to be human, and a boy discovering he was never meant to be mortal.

"Where do you see yourself in five years?" A simple interview question that I always hated. Nobody knows where they're actually going to be in five years and guessing just feels like you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
