I opened my eyes to a new world, yet that nightmare still haunted me, slowly bleeding me dry, draining the warmth and security from my soul, bit by bit. I lay on a small bed, as if I had shrunk to the size of a lost child, or as if the world had suddenly decided to expand without warning.
Beside me lay a larger bed, on which lay a woman I didn't know. I heard footsteps approaching, then a nurse entered and asked the captive woman something I couldn't hear. The woman wept and pleaded vehemently, while the nurse walked toward the window, surprised by her request not to open it.
But despite all the pleading, she drew back the curtains, opened the window, and poured a little water onto the plant on the small table. Sunlight streamed into the room, and then the nurse left, as if nothing had happened. The sunlight touched her... and she crumbled to ash, vanishing from existence as if she had never been, still weeping bitterly and looking at me with sorrow. A strange man entered, his feet dragging him inside as if they refused to take the step. He collapsed to his knees in surrender at the sight of the charred remains, a bouquet of roses and a doll slipping from his hands and falling with him. He made no attempt to shield himself from the sunlight, and in seconds, he dissipated like the dust from old books, leaving behind traces similar to those left by the unknown woman.
The doctors appeared in the room and began collecting the remains of the two of them in plastic bags, like detectives gathering evidence.
