After the shooting of two unarmed teenagers, the country becomes at odds with whether law enforcement is even needed anymore. With the country in turmoil, politicians pass a bill called "the vote." It would allow those that voted that law enforcement was no longer needed to be moved to a small section of the country to govern themselves. They expected to have few people turn out for the vote, and even fewer people vote that law enforcement was no longer needed. However, many were surprised when half of the population voted that law enforcement was no longer needed. With the country divided, a wall is built, splitting the country in half. This story tells the life of James Finley, a teenager who is forced to move to the lawless side of the wall with his siblings after his father votes that law enforcement is no longer needed. James, a well-rounded, intelligent high school student, is forced to grow up quickly when every night on the opposite side of the wall is like living on purge night. He faces not only the exterior battle of staying alive and keeping his family safe but an internal battle as well. Can he stay the kind-hearted kid his mom raised him to be, or does he become a product of his new environment?
