Vermillion, scarred since childhood by the red cuff that marked him "Mentally Disoriented," reflects on his bond with Euphorbia-the only one who's ever stood by him. Memories of their cuffing ceremony in the orphan division haunt him, contrasting her fearless defiance with his own fear. In the present, as Euphorbia sleeps soundly, Vermillion breaks down. Tired of hiding behind leather straps that mask his shame, he saws them apart, even as authority closes in. For the first time, he chooses defiance, not silence.
