Alison Vanderville has fought long and hard as the Realm's chosen Ultimate Wielder, and her work has finally paid off. Magic is restored to the Realm. All those who tried to bring about its destruction are gone. Alie can finally focus on healing the worlds that have been contaminated, as well as take some time for herself to discover what wonders the Realm holds. There's just one threat she forgot about: Commander Sole. When he attacks her camp in the middle of the night, Alie is unprepared. He locks her away without magic and without hope, determined to make her pain as great as his own. But as the commander begins to second guess his actions, Alie must decide if he deserves a second chance - or if his choices are deadly enough to eliminate him once and for all.

All Alie wants is a little magic to spice up her dull, mundane life. With the help of her best friend, a rouge thief, and a powerful butterfly trapped in crystal, she must use the sword to stand against the forces of darkness overtaking the realm and its people. Alie knew becoming the realm's savior wouldn't be easy. But ever since the emperor's death, her job has become a lot harder. Between scrounging for food, dodging Commander Sole's elite Phantom soldiers, and chasing rumors in search of the stolen magic, she feels it might even be impossible. Desperate, she risks breaking her own rules in the name of survival. With the realm crumbling around her and no one she can trust, Alie must find the secret to saving the realm - and fast - or everything she has ever loved will be torn from her.
