Plus, it's a universe where certain individuals are born with skills from the Attack On Titan 2 Video Game, thus making them more powerful than normal soldiers. What is the cost for freedom? Being able to defeat the Titans and save humanity was the dream. That was the ideal. It wasn't always the main goal but it was the driving force of those who wanted to achieve something for humanity. The purpose of those who wanted something more in the world full of fear. But no one ever survives beyond the Walls. You either die on the inside or die trying to find out what's on the outside. Those who sign themselves up for the Survey Corps would know that the best. But nothing stops them from trying to set everyone free. No matter how many die, no matter how many Titans they kill - they keep going to find out why they were in those Walls. Even if it kills them.
