As a result, he like a coward along with Jon Arryn, arranged their assassination. Ned Stark, who found out about their plan didn't agree with them and secretly managed to send a letter in order to warn them. But it was too late, seeing as the assassins already killed most of the members of the family. Only the new born twins were saved by a sworn shield of their household as he was the one who got the letter. For the good of the realm, Rhaegar wrested all the power from Aerys, as Prince Regent. Under suspicious circumstances Aerys died two months after peace was restored. As a reward to Tywin, Rhaegar released Jaime from his oath of the Kingsguard and the latter wed Lysa Tully. After quelling another rebellion, this time by the Greyjoys, seven-year-old Prince Aegon was sent to foster with Tywin, while Vaelar grew up as Rhaegar's second son.
