The Targaryen dynasty had successfully quelled the rebellion. Robert Baratheon, struck by an arrow in the tumult of the Battle of Ashford, tumbled from his steed snapping the neck. The winds of fate had blown in the opposite direction and Tywin Lannister, answering Aerys's plea, had joined the royalists and crushed the rebellion before it began. Jon Arryn perished, and Ned Stark and Hoster Tully were spared by Rhaegar's mercy, honoring Lyanna Stark's dying wish, after she bore him Prince Vaelar (Jon Snow). For the good of the realm, Rhaegar wrested all the power from Aerys, as Prince Regent. Under suspicious circumstances Aerys died two months after peace was restored. As a reward to Tywin, Rhaegar released Jaime from his oath of the Kingsguard and the latter wed Lysa Tully. After quelling another rebellion, this time by the Greyjoys, seven-year-old Prince Aegon was sent to foster with Tywin, while Vaelar grew up as Rhaegar's second son.
