~ "Take a deep breathe, my darling", he whispered. It felt wrong, we weren't supposed to be involved like this. "And what if that doesn't help?" I muttered back. "Then I know something else that can." With a devilish grin he'd tug me by the arm to lead me off somewhere, to where I wasn't certain, but it could never be good if he was smiling like how he was then. "C'mon baby, I know how to calm ya down." "But I promised George-" "Enough about him, hon. For tonight, you're with me." "What about tomorrow? What happens then?" "Tomorrow we'll run away together." "Really?" His eyes would soften. He'd pull me to his chest and bring his one hand up to cup my cheek, stroking the skin just under my eye. He'd glance down to my lips, and then back up again as if I were the only girl that he had ever lusted over. He'd rest his forehead on mine, closing his eyes to savor the moment, breathing a sigh through his nose. Then he'd pull away completely, a smirk playing on his lips like he'd just won the lottery. "Nah!" And he'd laugh, bent over and slapping his knee like it was the most hilarious thing he'd ever heard. Tom Buchanan always had a sick sense of humor like that. ~

☆ ᴡᴀᴛᴛʏꜱ 2024 SHORTLISTER!! ☆ A tragic misunderstanding. A murder. A secret. An unlikely partnership. A spirited countess and an enterprising racketeer. ~~~ Manchester, England. May 1925. The Roarin' 20s. An era of glamor, decadent parties, jazz music, flowing booze, and opulent wealth. Possibilities are endless. Anyone can be a success, even families once seen as working class. But beneath the glittering exterior lies a world of corruption, prejudice, and civil unrest. When the disappearance of a Russian refugee brings Countess Rose Sinclair to the doorstep of known racketeer William Mercer, neither party is prepared for the significant changes a single encounter can inspire. Blackmailed by William into employment, Rose receives a swift and unwanted education regarding a side of the class struggle she has never before experienced. As she unwillingly ventures deeper into the precarious world of the Mercer family and their notorious gang the Deansgate Streeters, Rose finds herself torn between her moral compass, her suppressed rebellious youth, her growing love for a motherless toddler, and her mounting attraction for William, a man she has every reason to despise. ⚠️ Read with caution: foul language, violence, trauma, and sexual content (fade to black only) within. This book is intended for readers 21+ ⚠️

Every believer prays to God, but only a few chosen-The Masters of the Name-know His true Name. When one such Master of the Name or Baal Shem, an Hasidic Rabbi, is found dead at his mansion with a cryptic bloody message etched on his forehead, Detective Gray resorts to the expertise of a renowned scholar, who unveils the link between the murderer's message and a mysterious medieval manuscript. YHWH-the holiest Name of God, revealed to Moses on Mount Horeb, the most powerful Name in this world and in The World to Come, the Name that gives both life and death. Its true pronunciation was lost with the destruction of the Second Temple, yet some Jewish tales say that even today there are a few chosen ones, known as Baalei Shem or Masters of the Name, who are able to utter the Ineffable Name and thereby perform miracles. When one such Baal Shem, an Hasidic Rabbi, is found dead at his mansion in Tiburon, CA, with a cryptic bloody message inscribed on his forehead, Detective Gray prime suspect is Tobias Serebrennikoff, a professor of literature at UC Berkeley and a J.D. Salinger's epigone, who becomes a fugitive with the help of a loyal student, Maggy Vetrini. Tobias's flight from the law turns into a pilgrimage in an effort to reconnect with his Russian Orthodox roots and to prove his innocence before the police find him. Detective Gray makes use of the expertise of a renowned Jewish scholar, who unveils the link between the murderer's codified messages and a strange piece of evidence, a medieval manuscript--Sefer ha-Shem (The Book of the Name)--by Rabbi Eleazar of Worms, a famous medieval Cabalist, wonder-worker and golem-maker. Following every available clue, Gray comes to believe that Tobias is just a scapegoat for the real killer, who devised an arcane murder to cover more mundane reasons.
