As the Fellowship breaks apart, a shadow seems to arise in their presence. Someone, or something, keeps following them as Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli track the Uruk Hai who took their friends. Even with his eyesight, Legolas can not tell if the shadow is real or a part of the looming war. Deep in Rohan, a woman questions her heritage, then turns it into her greatest asset. With the companionship of Eomer and the other Rohirrim, she sets out on what she initially thought was an exile until she stumbled upon a group tracking their latest victims. She doesn't want to help them because they are strangers, and she's seen what happened to Rohan. But something in her blood encourages her to act as a guide. At least for the time being. Amära's father is killed defending Rohan from Orc attacks under Theodred's leadership, while the King was . . . temporarily indisposed. With his death came also the loss of his sword and horse, further bringing their once-proud family into poverty. Amära is distraught over her father's death and particularly over the loss of his sword and the family horse -- the last connections she had of him. Hope springs a-fresh when a family friend finds once more the sword of her father, bringing back aspirations of becoming a shield-maiden under the King's banner. The year before the Ring War, Princess Lothíriel of Dol Amroth is sent to Rohan by her father to seek shelter from the storm brewing in Mordor. There she meets Éomer, Third Marshal of the Riddermark. Unfortunately they do not hit it off...at first.

A story styled oneshot where Eomer comes to the rescue of Thrya, a close consort to Eowyn; awkward skirting and avoidance can only last so long before one action causes realisation to kick in.

Eowyn is a daughter of horse lords, a shield-maiden of the mighty nation of Rohan. As the darkness of Mordor continues to overtake the lands of Middle-earth, she finds herself losing hope for herself and her country. She decides to stowaway as an undercover soldier as her uncle, the king, and his army goes to aid the armies of Gondor. Though there may not be much hope for winning this war, she aspires to die nobly while fighting for her land and world - except she does not find death, but finds a surprising alternative ending with something else entirely: hope. The end of "The Return of the King" as told from Eowyn's perspective.

Princess Lothíriel of Dol Amroth finds her peace of mind disturbed by the arrival of a courier from Rohan. What she does not realize, however, is the fact that this is only the beginning... A tale of carpets, cabbages and cold water.

Like all of us, the recent passing of Sir Ian Holm struck me deeply, and I felt the need to acknowledge that in my own way, with a gentle nod to his portrayal of our dear Uncle Bilbo. A short one-shot taking place within my 'Lament for the Rohirrim' series, wherein we glimpse a few moments that just didn't quite make it into the main story and witness how the adventures of a Hobbit of the Shire touch the life of a girl from Rohan, if only briefly. For it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Farewell, dear Bilbo, dear Ian.
